As a current student at Loyola Marymount University, I am excited to share with you all the exciting events and festivals that will take place in the Fall of 2024. From academic deadlines to cultural celebrations, there is something for everyone to look forward to.

Academic Calendar

Before diving into the fun stuff, let’s take a look at the academic calendar for the Fall of 2024. Classes will begin on August 26th and end on December 13th, with final exams taking place from December 16th-20th. There will be a one-week break for Thanksgiving from November 25th-29th.

Events and Festivals

Now onto the exciting stuff! Here is a list of some of the events and festivals happening on campus and in the surrounding community:

  • September 2nd-6th: Welcome Week for new students
  • September 14th: Mid-Autumn Festival, a celebration of the harvest and full moon in Chinese culture
  • October 1st-31st: Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood
  • October 11th: Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a day to honor and celebrate the history and culture of Indigenous peoples
  • November 1st-2nd: Dia de los Muertos, a Mexican holiday to remember and honor loved ones who have passed away
  • November 28th-December 1st: Thanksgiving weekend
  • December 7th-15th: Hanukkah, a Jewish holiday to celebrate the miracle of the oil in the Temple

Mid-Autumn Festival

One festival that stands out to me is the Mid-Autumn Festival. As someone who is half Chinese, this festival holds a special place in my heart. This festival is celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month, which typically falls in September or October. It is a time to celebrate the harvest and the full moon, as well as spend time with family and friends. On campus, there will be a lantern-making workshop and mooncake tasting event to celebrate this festival.

Dia de los Muertos

Another festival that I am looking forward to is Dia de los Muertos. This holiday is a time to remember and honor loved ones who have passed away. There will be an altar-making workshop on campus, where students can learn about the significance of the ofrenda and create their own to honor their loved ones.
